Ava awoke to the sun shining in her eyes. She opened her eyes slowly. Birds were singing and Ava felt loneliness rise up in her. She shifted and remembered that rope was tied around her wrists. Ava sat up as best as one could with their hands tied and their legs asleep. She placed her head into her hands and felt tears well up in her eyes. She blinked them away and wished she could find her brother. Ava heard horses’ hooves and she quickly stood up. She heard a shout.
“She’s down there!” shouted the voice. Ava turned and bolted through the trees. She didn’t care where she was going, just as long as she escaped from the men. She heard the men’s voices disappearing, yet Ava did not slow. She continued running until she could no longer distinguish the voices of men. “Ava! Ava?! Where are you?” a voice from the edge of a field shouted. A young man stood there, barely older then eighteen, his blonde hair waving in the wind, his brilliant green eyes searching the tall wheat of the field. He was wearing a white shirt that had the first three buttons undone, showing his chest. His pants were black leather that his mother had made from cow skin. He heard rustling in the wheat next to an apple tree. The young man smiled and went over to the apple tree, quietly. He pounced and birds scattered. The young man stood up and tsked. He looked around again, when something heavy fell on him from the sky. The young man landed on his back and got the wind knocked out of him. The scream echoed through the entire forest. Those who knew the scream knew what had happened. Those who didn’t, could only imagine what had happened. In the forest a young woman about the age of twenty five had only just lost her youngest child during birth. It was law that the woman giving birth had to go out to the forest and give birth by themselves. If the child lived then the goddess had saved it from the daemons trying to get it. If not, then the parent was not supposed to have a child at that point in time. The young woman sat there crying and grieving for she had wanted a child since she had only just remarried after her first husband died.
